New Year, New Dress, New Me.

New Year, New Dress, New Me.

The start of a new year is the perfect time to sit down and reflect over the past year. There’s something comforting in taking the time to really appreciate the growth and success you’ve achieved. I truly believe that we as human beings do not spend enough time congratulating  and appreciating ourselves. We are constantly focusing on the need to be better, thinner, healthier, and rarely take the time to reflect on how far we have already come in the journey. I am in no way saying that the desire to be better is bad, in fact I think there’s nothing better than constantly pushing yourself. It is however important to take the time and be grateful for the things you have accomplished so far. Recognize how far you have come. This new years I forced myself to really reflect on the steps, changes, and risks I have made in my life in 2015 and how they have affected my overall well being.

The New Year is also an excellent opportunity look forward, re-evaluate and re-align your goals. It’s a clean slate and a fresh start. But best of all it’s the perfect reason to keep pushing yourself to be the best you can be.  I can’t wait to propel myself through 2016.

This year I’m going to:

Spend as much time with family as I can

If there’s one thing that moving away from my family has taught me it’s that time with them is incredibly precious. To top it off I recently I read an amazing article that really put into perspective how much time we have left with our families, and the numbers really horrified me (Read article here). Knowing that because I live in a different city I won’t get to see them nearly as much makes me sad. Family is so incredibly important and I never want to become one of those people who just visits mom and dad once or twice a year for a few days. This year I am going to make an effort to see them as much as possible regardless of distance.

Focus on what I am passionate about and do something every day to develop my craft

Acting, just like any art, is something that needs to be constantly nurtured and developed. It is all too easy to just sit back passively and wait for auditions to come along. But sitting around waiting isn’t going to get you anywhere so I want to do everything I can to take my career in my own hands. This year I want to be proactive and constantly work on developing my art. Whether it’s reading a chapter from an acting/film book, studying classic plays, taking an improv class, working on an accent, or practicing scenes and monologues… I am going to take a little time out of each day to nurture my talent and develop my knowledge. I encourage everyone who is passionate about something to spend a little time every day working on it, I bet we will surprise ourselves by how far we’ve come this time next year.

Continue to make health & fitness a priority

I’m not one of those people that believes in silly New Years resolutions like losing a specific amount of weight or giving up something completely (moderation people!). However I do recognize that health and fitness are incredibly important. If my grandma’s recent hospitalization has made me realize anything it’s that it is so important to take care of yourself when you’re young so that your body is stronger when you’re old. Too many senior citizens are extremely frail and weak because of lack of regular exercise and a healthy diet when they were younger. Focusing on health & fitness now is only going to help you long term. It’s not going to be a miracle cure, but it can certainly help to reduce major issues that can occur later on in life.

Now for the fun part…

Okay so the title of this post doesn’t really fit… I’m not wearing a dress but oh well. I have recently developed an addiction to Bordeaux (otherwise known as burgundy.. oxblood.. I’m sure there’s a few other fun names for it kicking around) and I couldn’t think of a better colour to ring in the New Year in! I’m always looking for an excuse to get dressed up so you can imagine just how excited I get over New Years. Usually I like to go out and spend hours shopping, trying to figure out the perfect outfit to wear. This year I actually spent New Years in Kelowna with my family so I didn’t have an excuse to buy a new dress. That being said I wasn’t going to not dress up! So I threw this outfit together (aka. carefully planned out) with pieces I already owned.

What I Wore:

Peplum top – H&M // Belt – H&M // Heels – Aldo // Purse – Le Chateau // Earrings – Aldo Accessories

And finally the skirt. I am so excited I finally got the chance to post this skirt. Last year my mom helped me sew this skirt for a Christmas party I had and I’ve been in love with it ever since. Isn’t she talented? And there’s nothing better than owning something you know no one else has :). Now to figure out how to get her to sew me another…

Hoping you’re all having a great 2016 so far!

xoxo
