Weekend Jaunt

Weekend Jaunt

When I get a Saturday or Sunday off my favourite way to spend it lately is out exploring the city with friends. Usually this means an entire day of eating delicious food, drinking copious amounts of coffee, window shopping, location scouting, photo taking, and checking out corners of Toronto I don’t get the opportunity to visit on a day to day basis. I love heading out with no expectations or commitments, knowing we can take the day as we please and have nothing we have to rush off to. The slower pace is always a nice change, and helps me feel relaxed, recharged, and ready to take on the following week.

On this particular Saturday I met up with my friends Lance and Michael at Mildred’s Temple Kitchen for a delicious brunch on their patio, then went walking around Queen Street, visited an art show, shopped a bit, went to the East side where we checked out antique shops and had ice cream at Sweet Jesus (a MUST for anyone visiting Toronto), and then walked to the Distillery District where we finished the day off with oysters and tartare on the patio at Cluny.

Mildred’s Temple Kitchen was one of my absolute favourite brunch spots we’ve visited lately… the patio was adorable, and the food was delicious and very satisfying. We started brunch off with coffee and homemade scones that were served with butter and jam. I had the Lottie Salad which was served with a healthy portion of bacon (yum!), Lance had the Huevos Monty, and Michael had the legendary light & fluffy blueberry buttermilk pancakes.. which we can all confirm really are legendary, because of course we wouldn’t let Michael get away with not sharing.

Beyond delicious food Mildred’s also has a little bit of scandal behind it. If you’ve ever been there, you may have noticed (and been confused by as we all were) the airplane themed unisex washrooms. Although I thought it was kind of neat that rather than music they had announcements from flight attendants over the private washroom stall speakers, it made absolutely no sense with the decor of the rest of the restaurant. We could’t figure out why this theme had been chosen and how it fit in, and it wasn’t until a few days later that one of my friends filled me in. Apparently back in 2010 Mildred’s Temple Kitchen ran a Valentines Day promotion encouraging couples to have sex in their washrooms, giving them a sort of “mile high club” vibe. I didn’t believe him but after googling it, I know he wasn’t lying (check out this article here). If you live in Toronto you may already know about this, and considering it was 6 years ago it’s OLD news to you. But if you didn’t know this already, I hope you found it just as fascinating as I did. And you’ll definitely have to stop by Mildred’s to check out the washrooms sometime (and try the legendary pancakes).
