Fall Photoshoot Ideas – Foliage Focused
Nothing screams the autumn season like vibrant fall foliage in reds, oranges and yellows.
Here are some suggestions for places you can go to capture some unique and beautiful fall foliage in your fall photoshoots.
1. Forest path
A quick walk down a path in the forest can lead you to the most beautiful of foliage and fall photoshoot opportunities around every corner.
Don’t get discouraged if the fall foliage around you doesn’t look quite as vibrant as this. I’ll tell you a little industry secret – Photographers always change the hue and saturation of foliage in their photos to make them appear even more fall-like!
I used my Salted Caramel Mobile Lightroom Preset to really bring out the golden hues in the fall foliage of these photos.
You’ll love this easy one click edit that will turn all the greens in your photos to golden hues.
2. A Quiet Road
The fall season can really transform an otherwise boring road into a magical autumn scene that looks like something straight out of a fairytale.
I stumbled on this road lined with beautiful fall foliage in Kelowna and it made for the perfect photo opportunity.
I love the way the golden trees line the road. Isn’t fall such a beautiful season?
The photo above was edited using my Vintage Fall mobile Lightroom preset.
3. Take a Hike
There’s no surprise that venturing further into the wilderness can bring you into some pretty incredible fall photoshoot spots.
Whether you head into the mountains, hike around a local lake, or head into a national park it’s guaranteed you’ll find all sorts of incredible spots to capture fall pictures.
These photos were taken on the Opal Hills hike in Jasper which is an incredible hike to do in the fall.
You can check out my guide to the best hikes in Jasper here!
The leaves when I did this hike were just starting to change and it was so beautiful.
I love the way the yellow foliage dotted the mountainous terrain. It made for perfect fall photos!
Destination Fall Photoshoot Ideas
Fall doesn’t just mean fall foliage.
There are lots of great destination spots that you can visit to capture some unique and very fall themed content.
Here are just a few destination ideas for your fall photoshoots.
4. Apple Orchard
One of the things I think about first when it comes to fall is visiting an apple orchard. There’s something so comforting about all things apple during autumn. Think of apple cider, hot apple pie, and even bobbing for apples!
An apple orchard is the perfect place to visit to get some amazing fall photos. Plus you can take all your yummy props (the apples) home after!
These fall apple orchard photos were edited with my Vintage Fall mobile Lightroom preset.
5. Corn Maze
Who doesn’t love visiting a corn maze in autumn?
It’s such a fun fall activity and makes for a great opportunity to get some fall pictures.
I love the way @alexandratealeaf shot her series of fall photos in a corn maze.
It’s such a great and unique fall photoshoot idea.
6. Pumpkin Patch
I can’t have a list of fall photoshoot ideas without mentioning a pumpkin patch!
After all fall is not fall without a visit to a pumpkin patch.
Not only is visiting a pumpkin patch a great activity to get you into the spirit of the season, pumpkins make for great fall photo props.
Fall Photoshoot Ideas – Using Props
From fall florals to leaves, here’s some fun and creative fall photoshoot ideas using props!
Even something as simple as an old camera and a basket of apples make for great fall photo props.
7. Fall Florals
When you think of florals you likely thing of spring right away – but autumn has it’s fair share of beautiful florals.
When it comes to fall florals you can expect rich jewel tones, deep burgundies and golden yellows.
Fall florals make for the perfect addition to any fall photoshoot.
You can use fall florals as props in a simple and elegant way like I did here.
Or if you want to get more creative check out this post which has a whole section dedicated to creative ways to use florals in your photoshoots.
These photos were edited with my vintage fall mobile lightroom preset.
8. Throw Leaves in the air
A classic fall photo you’re guaranteed to see all over instagram is of people throwing up leaves in the air.
You would think this would be an easy fall photo idea but honestly in my opinion it’s hard! You can never quite get the leaves to fall right.
9. Make a Leaf Skirt
Another popular fall photoshoot idea that’s all over Instagram is leaf skirts!
There are two ways to make these photos.
First, you can have a friend snap your photo while holding up a leaf in front of you.
This one is a little trickier if you’re using a camera because either you or the leaf will be blurry.
This fall photo idea is best done with a phone camera.
An even easier way to do it though is to take a photo of your hand holding out a leaf, and take a separate photo of you posing.
Then use photoshop to put the two images together. This is how a lot of creator’s get this effect.
I edited the above photo with my Apple Pie Lightroom Preset which you can use to get the same look on your photos.
10. Make Angel Wings with Leaves
There are lots of fall photoshoot ideas you can do with leaves and this one is similar to the concept above.
Instead of holding a leaf up as a skirt though you will hold two out as angel wings.
Isn’t the resulting photo super cute? I just love it!
11. Hold a Leaf
Whether you grab a big or small leaf, or even a handful of them they’re great props for all of your fall photos.
I recently shot these fall photos on the same road I shared above and I just love how they make the photos just a little more interesting.
Leaves make such great props for your photography don’t you think?
The photos above were edited with my Fall Vintage Lightroom Preset which you can get for yourself here.
12. Make a leaf umbrella
This one’s a very time consuming but super creative fall photoshoot idea.
Grab an umbrella and either glue or tape leaves to it until you’ve got the whole umbrella covered.
Or if you want to do something a little easier you can just cover the edge of the umbrella with leaves like @lenasaibel. This way is definitely less time consuming!
13. Set up a Fall Picnic
One of my favourite fall photoshoot ideas (actually it’s a favourite year round really!) is to set up a picnic.
Although setting up a picnic scene can take a little more time to due to all the props and food required, people really love these kinds of photos! It’s definitely worth the effort.
My picnic photos always perform really well.
There are all sorts of props you can use for a fall themed picnic photo. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Pumpkins
- Apples
- Pie
- Doughnuts
- Candles
- Books
- Cozy knits
- Plaid blanket
- Baskets
- Fall flowers
- Starbucks cup
14. Try a Fall Flat lay
Flat lays are always a super cute photography idea.
Use any of the props listed above and have some fun creating your own fall flat lay photos.
15. Make use of the Fallen Leaves
I couldn’t write a post on fall photoshoot ideas without mentioning fallen leaves!
There are so many different ways you can make use of fallen leaves in your photos.
I love the way @anajohnson made a “snow” angel with leaves in the above photo. Isn’t it such a creative fall photoshoot idea?
I also love the way @anna_ix_ shot the below fall photo.
Although I can imagine this would be a lot of work and very time consuming, laying the leaves out in a pattern like this looks spectacular in the end.
It’s definitely one of the more creative fall photoshoot ideas.
16. Cut a heart shape into a leaf and use it to frame your photo
This is definitely one of the more creative fall photoshoot ideas on the list!
I absolutely love how these turn out.
I finally got the chance to try this myself and here’s how it turned out!
17. Make an Autumn Leaf Crown
@margusha___ is always one of the most creative creators on instagram and I just love the photos she puts out.
I included some of her super creative photo ideas in my outdoor photoshoot guide and had to include her in this autumn photography guide.
I just love the leaf crown she created in the above image.
It’s such a creative fall photo concept and the result looks amazing!
Fall Photoshoot Ideas – Halloween theme
Tis the season for all things spooky and I couldn’t post this list of fall photoshoot ideas without touching on Halloween!
This year may look a little different at Halloween than past years but that doesn’t mean we can’t still make some fun halloween photos.
18. Be a Pumpkin Head
I love how cute these pumpkin head photos are and they are relatively easy to make. Some people actually cut holes in the bottom of the pumpkin and slip their head inside.
But here’s a little tip – you can also just hold the pumpkin in front of your face which is a lot easier!
19. Get Witchy
You can’t have Halloween without witches!
Grab yourself a witch hat and shoot in a cemetery like I did below.
Or head to a spooky forest and create a scene like @jerianie did below.
I just love how it turned out and it’s so easy to do yourself!
20. Get your ghost on
Another super easy Halloween post idea to do is ghost costumes.
Grab a sheet, cut out a couple eyes and you’re all set for Halloween! I love how @christinaloewen shot this photo with her little girls… spooky!
